Avoiding large squares in infinite binary words

چکیده
We consider three aspects of avoiding large squares in infinite binary words. First, we construct an infinite binary word avoiding both cubes xxx and squares yy with |y| ≥ 4; our construction is somewhat simpler than the original construction of Dekking. Second, we construct an infinite binary word avoiding all squares except 0, 1, and (01); our construction is somewhat simpler than the original construction of Fraenkel and Simpson. In both cases, we also show how to modify our construction to obtain exponentially many words of length n with the given avoidance properties. Finally, we answer an open question of Prodinger and Urbanek from 1979 by demonstrating the existence of two infinite binary words, each avoiding arbitrarily large squares, such that their perfect shuffle has arbitrarily large squares.

Cubefree binary words avoiding long squares
Entringer, Jackson, and Schatz conjectured in 1974 that every infinite cubefree binary word contains arbitrarily long squares. In this paper we show this conjecture is false: there exist infinite cubefree binary words avoiding all squares xx with |x| ≥ 4, and the number 4 is best possible. However, the Entringer-Jackson-Schatz conjecture is true if “cubefree” is replaced with “overlap-free”.
متن کاملA generator of morphisms for infinite words
We present an algorithm which produces, in some cases, infinite words avoiding both large fractional repetitions and a given set of finite words. We use this method to show that all the ternary patterns whose avoidability index was left open in Cassaigne’s thesis are 2-avoidable. We also prove that there exist exponentially many 7 4 + -free ternary words and 7 5 + -free 4-ary words. Finally we ...
متن کاملAvoiding large squares in partial words
Well-known results on the avoidance of large squares in (full) words include the following: (1) Fraenkel and Simpson showed that we can construct an infinite binary word containing at most three distinct squares; (2) Entringer, Jackson and Schatz showed that there exists an infinite binary word avoiding all squares of the form xx such that |x| ≥ 3, and that the bound 3 is optimal; (3) Dekking s...
متن کاملWords avoiding repetitions in arithmetic progressions
Carpi constructed an infinite word over a 4-letter alphabet that avoids squares in all subsequences indexed by arithmetic progressions of odd difference. We show a connection between Carpi’s construction and the paperfolding words. We extend Carpi’s result by constructing uncountably many words that avoid squares in arithmetic progressions of odd difference. We also construct infinite words avo...
متن کاملOverlap-Free Words and Generalizations
The study of combinatorics on words dates back at least to the beginning of the 20 century and the work of Axel Thue. Thue was the first to give an example of an infinite word over a three letter alphabet that contains no squares (identical adjacent blocks) xx. This result was eventually used to solve some longstanding open problems in algebra and has remarkable connections to other areas of ma...
